Workers protest for demanding arrears of wage and opening of factories in Gazipur

Garments workers staged a protest on Monday morning for reopening of factories with arrears of wages and lay offs in Bhogra area under Gazipur city corporation.The agitated workers set fire to three motorcycle and eight bicycle and also blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.Then, the industrial police dash tear gas to disperse the workers.

According to the industrial police and workers, earlier a month the authorities of stylish garments factory in Bhogra area announced the lay off of the factory till 30 April.Before the lay off,the salaries of 30 workers and 80 percent salaries of 60 staff were in arrears.The workers of the factory had been demanding immediate reopening of the closed factory and payments of arrears to the workers since tow days.

As their demands was not met, the workers gathered at front of the factory at abut 8:30 am on Monday morning. Later, they lobbied the workers of the nearby factories like Valmont fashion,Crown fashion,Techno fiber not to work in their respective factories.At one stage, the stared to thrown brickbats at those factories.

The workers set fire to three motorcycles and eight bicycles parked on the side of the highway in front of the Crown fashion factory.At first police told them to leave the highway but they didn’t respond.Later police fire tear gas at 10 a.m and control the situation then normal the highway for traffic.

Due to movement of workers the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway is closed to traffic from 8:30  am to 11:00 am.Due to which freight vehicles and private vehicles got stuck both sides.When police took control the situation, the traffic started to move at 11:00 am.
